"Scoodly Wah-Wah", Daddy-os!

Welcome to "The Sweatbox Lounge" , the coolest spot on the block. A cozy little neighborhood place with a warm and friendly atmosphere. Where the legal tender is a smile and the local tongue is "skat". Here it sits in a quiet residential area, a respite from the cares of the day. Hangout for the Hip and the Hopeful. A place to unwind, where your company is requested and your welcome never wanes.

The name, "Sweatbox Lounge", is actually derived from the rich history of Disney animation. The same history that brought the storyboard to the film industry decades ago. "Sweatbox" was the term the animators in the 1930s used to describe a small room with a Moviola in it, into which they would all crowd to watch the current dailies of a production with Walt Disney, himself. Now, this was before the days of lavish screening rooms and air-conditioning so you can probably imagine just how close it must have felt in there, especially when your scenes came up and you were on the hot seat. Hence the dual meaning of the term, "Sweatbox" and even though it no longer applies, the name stuck.

"The Sweatbox Lounge", small and cozy but not cramped or oppressive, stands as a monument to the great Hollywood Cartoon and to simpler times gone by. On the walls of the lounge, bathed in the glow of the red light bulb and a purple Lava Lite, Elvis swings his hips to the tunes of Johnny Mercer, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Betty Hutton and Buddy Holly who still play on the authentic Rockola Jukebox. Eerie neon reflects off old toys and cameras on the shelf, and antique bar paraphernalia is showcased just to the left of the bar with an authentic, working, brass Candlestick phone for making those local calls just like Andy or Barney in Mayberry. You may even find yourself askin' for Sarah!

As you look further, you will find an eclectic array of mementoes and memorabilia from cartoons of the past and of my career to date. Tex Avery's "Red Hot Riding Hood" gives a "come-hither" look from behind the bar, Tex Ritter as "The First Bad Man" has his pick of the caveman ladies, Jeffrey Katzenberg poses with Joanne Worley while George Jetson enjoys a cigar with Mr. Spacely and you can too. Cigar smoking is permitted in the Lounge and there's always soda pop and sparkling water for the "Tea-Totler". So don't be put off, join us at "The Sweatbox Lounge" website often for recipes of our featured cocktails and mixes, interesting links to related places, and photos of Lounge events as well as profiles of some of our regulars. #3 The Tan Fanny*

1 and a half oz. of Malibu Coconut Flavored Rum

Diet or Regular Cola

1 good sized wedge of fresh lime

1 Rocks Glass

1 cup Cracked or Crushed Ice

Fill the rocks glass with ice. Add Malibu Rum over the ice. Put the lime in the coconut and mix it all togedder. Leave the lime wedge in the glass. Gently pour cola over all, (we use diet cola so the fanny doesn't get out of hand, but regular coke is perfectly acceptable). The trick is to float the cola over the clear rum at the bottom, creating a not so subtle "tan line" where the two liquids meet. If you pour the cola too fast you blend the two liquids creating what a friend, Bridget Goldstein, calls a "Shiney Hiney". Lastly, you add a tropically themed swizzle stick to the beverage and serve immediately. Mmmmmm. Cool, Light, Refreshing.

I came up with this drink mid summer this year. And, though I know it is far from a radical innovation in mixology, I have served it to many folks, both friends and lounge professionals, and no one seems to have heard of this particular mix before. Everyone sure seems to like it, though. I guess it's the combination of coconut, lime and cola just goes down smoothly. I originally said it was like drinking sweet, smooth suntan lotion. Before long I dubbed the drink the "Tan Fanny"* and the name stuck.

I and my friends have been spreading this recipe across the land since it's invention and it has really caught on. Current reports are that it is now a popular drink at a bar Bridget visited in Austin, Texas. Yee Haw! Of course, you don't have to go that far for the recipe. You only have to come to "The Sweatbox Lounge" because I offer it to you here, just in time for the dog days of summer and the beginning of Autumn!

"Number Puh-Lee-Uhs......."

This wonderful relic of a bygone era brings a smile to everyone's face the moment they lay eyes on it. It is an authentic 1950s pay station telephone, just as you may remember them and in perfect working order. Of course, it's set up so that you don't need a dime to make a call, but if you remember the sound of the coins ringing their tones as they were deposited, you can still thrill to that same sound with this chrome and enamel beauty, only now your coins are returned neatly into the coin return slot below. So don't forget to check before you walk off.
